Forced to listen for a clicker to get them to line up for dinner or a clap of the hands to get them to line up for lunch. The orphans are locked up during the night and also during the day. Through hardship, pain, emotional rampage, Jennings learns that stuffed animals are not the only thing that is caged for protection. This metaphor grows into the entire essence of the book. Each night the nuns would come around and collect the animals, caging them in little cubbies. Early in the book we meet his constant friend, Doggie, a white and tan stuffed animal that was given to him, (at first) only at night, at the first home he stayed at. With his mother too tired, sick, and beaten down to care for him and his brothers, he is shipped off several times to either foster homes or to orphanages. Set in the 1950s, in New York City and its environs, we get the unforgettable account of a few years of Jennings's childhood. I still remember certain scenes where Jennings, the narrator, and the author of this autobiographical novel either received amazing amounts of love or terrible amounts of abuse. We also got to keep the books that were assigned to us. Interestingly enough, we got to read this in middle school. ![]() ![]() ![]() The things he does, however, are not condoned. ![]() The man Caradog Prichard, nearing insanity and obsessed with killing Bran's white dog, Cafall, is once described as "innocent" simply because he is not actually one of the Dark, though his actions clearly indicate that he is not at all innocent. Knowing that no one would believe him were he to tell the truth about his mission, Will lies a fair amount to his uncle and aunt about what is going on. Those feelings are, he says, good for men, but not the Old Ones. Will's reply is that the Light is there only to turn back the Dark, and that such emotions as pity cannot be allowed to sway the Light from its purpose. ![]() The question of the morality of the Light is raised when a man remarks that, at its heart, the power of the Light is very cold, often using men to their hurt for the greater good of mankind. Will must find the harp of gold, challenge the Grey King of the mountain, and wake the six Sleepers in preparation for the greatest rise of the Dark. But when he meets the strange boy Bran, with his white hair and golden eyes, the memories return. All his memories have been swept from his mind: the memories that would help him to find the second Thing of Power. In the pandemic prevention business, you need to see the future before it arrives and, as it turns out, there were a number of people who had anticipated precisely where things were heading. ‘A remarkable character’: Dr Charity Dean, deputy public health officer for California. What he means by that is that if you wait for sufficient evidence to establish that a pandemic is under way, it’s already too late to stop it. He opted for The Premonition because, he explains, “to control a virus you have to see around corners”. He decided against that title because he was worried that it would place his subjects in a harsh spotlight, by suggesting – incorrectly – that they were negligent with their knowledge. “The working title for most of the time I was working on it was The Ones Who Knew,” he tells me on a Zoom call from his office in Berkeley, California. Instead of following those whose lack of foresight has had such damaging effect on life and prosperity in America, he has focused on a group of health officials whose warnings were ignored. There are many approaches that could be taken with such a far-reaching crisis but Lewis has opted for a similar counterintuitive approach to the one he took in The Big Short. And one can imagine that the film rights will be quickly snapped up for The Premonition, Lewis’s pacy exploration of America’s response to the pandemic. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Finally, many of the If You Give a Moose a Muffin activities include more than one version, suggestions for differentiation, and options for presentation.
